Foods to Avoid if You Have Dentures

February 6, 2024

If you have just gotten your dentures in Fort Lauderdale, you might be wondering what foods you can and can’t eat. While you can eat most meals with your dentures, there are some foods that you still need to avoid if you want your dentures to last long. If you want to know what these are, here are some foods you need to avoid if you have dentures.

Foods You Should Initially Avoid With Dentures

Corncobs

Corncobs might not be the most popular snack or a meal, but plenty of people like to nibble on this food. You should avoid this food because the fiber of the corn can annoyingly get stuck in your dentures. Depending on the type of denture that you have, most dentures have a gap where it attaches to your mouth or teeth that food often gets stuck.

Hard or Chewy Steak

While not all steaks are cooked equally, steaks that are chewy and hard to eat can be bad for your dentures. Unless you eat a fresh and perfectly cooked steak that can be chewed easily, a steak with a rubber band's texture can cause gum pain and irritation. In some extreme instances, your dentures could potentially dislodge from your mouth completely.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds may have many health benefits; however, this food might be a problem if you recently got your dentures. While dentures can handle the pressure of eating certain nuts and seeds, you’ll still need to use both sides of your mouth to chew hard foods. This is to prevent your dentures from falling or popping off during the initial phase of your dentures.

Sticky Candy

If you love eating sticky candies such as caramel, toffee, and licorice, you might want to avoid them if you want your dentures to last longer. Sticky candy can get stuck on your dentures and are relatively harder to remove compared to getting stuck on natural teeth. Removing sticky candy might require you to remove your dentures entirely so that you can clean them.
